Because the number of music experiments has become so numerous and these are distributed over many pages I offer here a playlist as a small collection of pieces which allows some first impressions for 'beginners'. This collection is completely arbitrary and does not say anything about all the other pieces which are not presented here. The list will change -- and probably grow -- in time.
Quality of sound: Besides a good sound card You should use either very good earphones or good speakers. In a normal laptop or PC the quality is too bad. You can't hear most of the sounds!!!
This song 'Thunderstorm - Dancing Ahead Of' by cagentArtist, is now downloadable on different sites (e.g. amazon, iTunes). You can hear the sound of a real thunderstorm in dialogue with some instruments...
(++++)Natural Drive, completely 'hand made', no 'Music by Click'....(only the drums are 'borrowed', but are actually 'mixed' anew.....
(+++++) 5 Keys, some birds, making a sound(100%RUM) Yesterday night I got some new sound libraries. Playing with some principles recently stated (using expectations, using repetitions, using changes, using variations of sound for the same themes, switching between loud/quietly...) played with these unknown sounds. For this I used not more than about 5 different keys of the computer keyboard. As often I played without notes, without training, completely unplugged...
(++++)friday evening song, 2 voices, 2 pianos, 1 ebass I started with the two voices, added two pianos, then an ebass....der scheinbar banale Inhalt 'I didn't razer shave my skin' entspricht der Wahrheit.
(+++++) ePiano, some 'Blubs', eViolin, and Indian Drums I tried again the Indian Drums section of the handsonic instrument and I was very impressed; this turned the piece into some more 'dramatic' happening...what I would call the 'african spirit' is glooming somewhere in the background or underground.....
(+++++) Whispering of the Soul of Matter... (100%RUM) Stimulated by a very simple but energetic Rhythm of an old Blues Piece I played on my Roland Handsonic twi simple Rhythm Lines to get a feeling for such a simple Rhythm. The handsonic is somehow great but i think you have not the feeling like playing a 'real' hand rhythm instrument and surely be far not to compare with a real drum. Bu I havn't; thus I tried this. Because the sound of the handsonic voices was a bit 'poor' I enhanced every rhythm line with some effects. The result was quite stimulating. Then I connected my piano in the midi mode with a synthesizer and played some 'lead voice'. Then a contributed some 'background' with another synthesizer. But in that case I didn't play myself the keys but executed some pre-defined synthesizer clips.
The song 'Cry of the Parrots' by cagentArtist, is now downloadable on different sites (the number of sites will grow the next weeks)
(+++++) Between Stars (100%RUM) Einfach so.
(++++++) The Truth Plays Before the Black Giants...(100%RUM) I have experimented with some abstract 'dark' sound in the back and a very crisp and clear oboe-sound in the foreground. I am still curious about the many libraries of ableton. But besides this 'sound curiosity' I gave some space for inspirations. There was the picture of the '(seemingly) tiny truth' playing before the large dark giants of the 'all earth'... The tiny small truth got their hearts and the darkness was rumbling, but in comfort....This inspired me finally (several months later) to try a first 'music video' with self-made illustrations. I took some fotographs and worked over these with the gimp-image program in many ways. Completely new pictures came out of this. These I placed besides the music. For this I have used the 'Video Pro X4' software from magix. This is a really nice software.
(+++++) Collage of an athmosphere with no place (100%RUM) I got some new sound libs and today -- while writing some official documents and interrupting the writing -- I tried these new sounds. I put some rhytmic sounds in the center and then arranged others to the 'left' and 'right'... This is not working as a musician but rather a bit like 'composing'....you are playing with fragments of sound,...nevertheless it is still RUM because I am playing one track after the other puting it together while I am playing; thus it is not completely without 'playing'...I am still ever and ever again fascinated from the incredible variety of possible sounds and how one can 'synthesize' some sound with nearly everything....Thus sound is a kind of matter with an extreme plasticity... and our ears (and the brain) can handle them all...I experience this music as extremely relaxing!
GIRL FROM THE NORTH (2nd Version)
(100% RUM) Erste Version war eine spontane Idee. Habe mit akustischer Gitarre begonnen inklusive Soundeffekt vom kleinen Vox-Verstärker (Biertragerl-Format). Habe den Sound auf das Mischpult geleitet. Parallel Mikrophonaufnahme der Stimme. Text entstand beim Singen.
(+++++) Simple Exercise: random vs. non-random.(100%RUM) Following the idea, that music -- whatever it is -- is not noise, triggers many ideas for experiments. In this experiment I have chosen one track with a random cello sound. Against this I have recorded three tracks with different drum instruments (with my hands). These are more regular than random. Finally I have recorded an eGuitar which plays very static following simple rules. The phenomenon is that the more rule-like sounds are becoming 'stronger' and bring the random sounds more to the background. They are still there but they are not in the 'center' of the hearing.
You are the message of the universe (Rap-like...) You are the message of the universe'.
(+++++) Collage, not hot, not sweet, not cold -- youi dont't need it...(100%RUM) After a boring day a boring music....perhaps there is a covered relationship; if the tensions in your soul grew up the music has more color....not in this piece. 3 drums edited by myself but played automatically, 2 bass tracks, one midi-male voice, one piano....
(+++++)Against Controlling by Certification - Reaction (100%RUM; in this case I used 'visual feedback' of the midi-signs for some tracks!) According to the assumption that music can somehow 'transform' real tensions and emotions into a some more relaxed mood I have played and recorded this piece while beeing part of a certification process which manifests for me a new kind of metaphysics by concept-ruled non-reality trying to control life. We have to withstand this nonsense....Radically unplugged music is one substantial form of opposition and fighting against the life-destroying metaphysics of rules of any kind.....
Recording: I started with self-played drums, added a midi-bass, tried some rhythm-like eguitar and added a midi-solo with a strange sound from a sound-library (the bass-sound is also from a sound library). In this case I used during playing the visual feedback with the midi-signs of the screen. This is a difference to the most radically form playing only by hearing, remembering and expectations based on memory. Without visual feedback it is rather difficult to produce some 'coherence' in the sounds if the number of tracks is increasing. Due to the limits of our working-memory it is for a human person impossible to play actually and at the same time thinking about more than some finite number of about 5-7 'chunks 'simultaneously. Even 'professional' musicians can handle such situations only if they follow some 'memorized patterns' which are known by all players. Using visual feedback of midi-signs enables our perception to 'see' several tracks simultaneously and grasping many time slots at the same time. This allows some 'computation' of possible 'coherences'. Nevertheless it allows a 'radically unplugged' mode.
Zero Music ... Nobody is important(RUM 100%) This was a very dense week, not bad, indeed inspiring, but very dense; nearly no chance to relax. And yesterday night, while I was working I checked some things with my ableton live program.... nothing worked. A complete no-working. Couln't find a cause...And tonight, friday evening, my wife had a meeting, I tried again... and it worked. The outcome was this piece: zero music, no part is in a dominant role, everything is there, somehow, individually, all together. One is wondering what it all could be about....There are 4 tracks with drums. Two are manually played, two I have produced with drum-clips first. The other tracks are synthetic instruments: two bass tracks and two solo voices. afterwards I have only added some reverb and occasionally some acoustic effects.
(+++++) Rain and Thunder, somewhere chords..(100%RUM) Examination days are always stimulating, as it happens. After 6, 8, and more hours of examining students and projects it is good to interrupt a while, be silent, listening to sounds. I sarted with an electronic flute and a clarinette, added some male choir and rock organ, then I tried different drums, but withdraw these again and added and old recording of a strong rain with some thunder.
The following pieces have in common, that they are buildup a 'steadily growing sound wave'. Besides this they are very different. But be patient: relax for 6-10 Minutes per piece; they all are beginning very calm, nearly no loud, and then step by step a sound is emerging... For this I used different packages from the new major release of ableton live 9.1.
Athmospheric Up and Down.(+++++)(100%RUM) For this I used clips from the general clips-Package
'Coming To An End'(++++)(100%RUM) After receiving the new 9.1 release of the ableton live software I have run several small experiments. This is the third experiment using different clips and instruments. It is an interesting problem how one shall deal with sounds between 'pure noise' and 'completely specified structures' (with notes, with rules for harmonies, whith fixed rhythms etc.). There must be some rules, otherwise we have noise, but there can not be too many rules otherwise we have a completely determined piece without any 'freedom'. Even if one only plays in an 'radically unplugged' style one experiences this problem directly. Too much 'usual patterns' destroy the character of the whole piece, but too less let the piece becoming 'noise-like'....
Athmospheric Study 4 (+++++)(100%RUM) For this I used clips from the general clips-Package and some properties of the Max4Live tools.
Another Growing Wave (+++++)(100%RUM) For this exercise I used the AAS Journeys Package, instruments as well as clips.
Exercise with drums and atmospheric sounds(++++)(100%RUM). Puzzle music enhanced with live sounds...I tried some drum machnines with the ableton live 'impulse' instrument, recorded some midi clips and combind them in four different scenes. Then I have played these scenes at will in some free order and recorded this. After this 'pre playing' I activated three other sounds from the orchestra (double bass) and from the operator instrument (two different sounds) and played them in a RUM style while hearing the other tracks so far... the usual RUM procedure.
Exercise, let an electric oboe walk on moving grounds...(++++)(100%RUM). Recording of some drum clips to provide minimal fiexed drums patterns, used for puzzle music. Then playing some additional tracks with a double bass, two atmospheric sounds supporting the bass, finally playing an electric oboe behind a rock amplifier.
Noisy Times - Exp.1(RUM 100%) I have started a new series of experiments with different kinds of noise and combinations of these. Noise is the ultimate sound compared to the colors 'black' or 'white' in painting. Whatever is 'different to noise' is a candidate for a 'real sound' or even for 'music'. Thus to make radically systematic experiments with that what possibly can be music means to experiment with noise, noise-similar sounds, noise-different sounds and several kinds of variations. It's something. I did never expect that noise could become so exciting. Almost all the times before noise appeared to me as some 'ugly' event. But it is somehow the 'root' of everything which can be 'nice' and 'beautiful'. This is some analogous case compared with 'quantum reality' as the 'a-causal' ground of everything which we perceive as 'ordered reality'. Thus as 'noise' is the potential for every kind of 'order' is the 'a-causal quantum reality'. There can be no 'order' without 'chaos', without 'noise'. 'Order' appears as 'order' embedded in 'non-order'; otherwise we could not perceive it. This is 'meta-logic', 'meta-science', 'meta-physics'; something which the old greek philosophers already had detected very nicely......
Noise, lesser noise, other noise, the one noise catches all(RUM 100%) Another exercise with noise. Even slight differences change the character of noise, transform it into an event, generate changes, coalition of changes, changes can be 'interpreted' as a talk, as many talks...
Three instruments, and three accompanying lines(++++)(100%RUM). After more than 8 weeks of not playing any instrument I only wanted to play something in that moment. No idea, no plan, only playing....OK
They Appear and Disappear(++++)(100%RUM). While I was trying new sound libs I exercised a little 'increasing sound' with a 'decreasing'. It starts out from complete silence and builts itself up very slowly. The drums are not so convincing, but the background sound has 'something'.
Nearly truly anarchistic - Beach and Bar transformed into instruments(RUM 100%) Somehow I was a little bit stuck in my 'anarchistic' experiments. But then, a bit by chance, II had problems with wav-files from my smartphone loaded into ableton, because the sampling parameters did not fit. Then I remembert that the new version ableton life 9 offers you different transformations from autio to midi. I appled this to my wav-files and, suprise, this sounded very 'random', but notwithout some 'flair'.... Therefore I cutted a bit the wave files, converted them with the ableton function and attached different midi instruments to the new midi files. The result you can here. The original sounds have been taken at a beach in Brazil and in a restaurant in brazil with many voices. Thus, now you can hear a midi node structure representing a translation of the original sounds.... I like it... open question: do I like it on account of the sound or on accont of the memories to the nice times there? Probably both is right....
20Min: Being Self while Constantly Changing(++++)(100%RUM). Somehow just another exercise. I heavely made use of sounds from the 'Unnatural Selection' library attached to ableton live 9. Having the dimensions 'bass', 'drums', 'ambient', 'rhythms', and 'strings' I combined these dimensions in one sound while changing dynamically within these dimensions. Somehow to play with these new sounds, somehow to experiment with certain structures. Although this followed not a to deep 'concept' the result isn't so bad. Listenig to this is a mixture of 'chilling', 'relaxing'... Perhaps I will continue to make more experiments with this soundfile...
Anarchistic Symphony - A lonely Piano surrounded by many weird Sounds(RUM 100%) While trying another sound library from ableton I compiled more than 14 different sound sources as a context against which I finally have played the keys of a piano. It is another exercise in exloring new sounds, playing a little bit with structures.
Test with saffire Interface...(++++)(100%RUM). I checked a configuration with my laptop + ableton life 9, Focusrite saffire Pro24 DSP interface with firewire, an Akai MPK49 controller via usb to the laptop, a guitar via input 1 of saffire, and a connection from the earphone 1 of saffire to a yamaha PA. The sound doesn't matter too much. I played in the background three pattern drums, added some midi-cello, then some weird midi-sound, and finally I played a fender strat California Corona with no special idea. Alltogether there is some 'sound'. Problems: with the saffire interface I cannot handle as much devices as with the Mackie mixers, and the bandwidth has to be lower.
Piano with some wild context(++++)(100%RUM). I played with my MPK49-Controller setting three drums in the background, played then three piano pattern and added then some more drums. While trying to find more voices I couln'nt find something which convinced me. Thus we have a very lively context with only two times a rather calm piano...
9/11 - Die Anderen Sterben Lautlos(++++)(100%RUM) Es begann mit Musikmachen, spielen. Manuell Schlagzeug spielen (handsonic).
We Are Dancing Here Against ...(++++)(100%RUM) Ja, diese Thematik lässt mich noch nicht so schnell los.
Odysseus at the site of some strange sounding sirenes...(RUM 100%) The sirenes of Homer's Odyssey dwelling in the wilderness of the ocean and attrackting people by their music... I started with the real noise of the ocean, while I was sitting on some mediterranean island and experimented with some sounds interacting with the noisy noise of the ocean, imaging Homer encountering these sounds. I one closes the eyes and one gives space to the sounds it can have some stimulations....
Before Midnight - Sound Cocktail(RUM 100%) Eine Spur mit Drumclips zusammengebaut, den Rest 'per Hand'. Insgesamt 3 Drumlinien, usw.
(+++++)Never Go Into The Foggy Lands of Power (Version 2)(RUM100%) Habe den Drum-Teil von dem anderen Instrumentalstück gelassen und neu instrumentiert.
(+++++)Dark Sonata Before Morning: Eyes are wide open(RUM80%) This time I played everything without prefabricated pattern. I started with an eBass, added then some simple drums, then a cello with some light drums; then an eGuitarr with effects; finally a voice. My lyrics is actually a bit simple; always the same ideas..... somehow I am fixed to a basic problem, which has to be solved.
(+++++) Pattern Exercise: Rhythm and Choire. I have only tried some new libraries.
Ibn Sina - Avicenna - The Great Man - muslimic philosopher, and more.... Somehow I started with an exercise with rhythmic patterns from some library, played the electric gitarre, and then added spontaneously some text about Ibn Sina, Avicenna, the Great. I started reading in his metaphysics; a great text.
Continuing Journey into cagentArtist's-Sound-Space - Street of the Howling Somethings(RUM 100% - partially patternd) I repeated the general strategy from the last piece with some changes: again three tracks with drum-patterns, afterwards processed by some digital processing adding randomness. Then an eBass played manually processed by some digital soundprocessing, and finally playing a digital piano with digital soundprocessing afterwards. Thus, seen from the end, although the basic sounds were comparably very 'regular', the digital processing with built-in randomness transforms this regularity very strongly. The result is a sound which appears randomly but with some residue of regularity. Perhaps this is a good approach to 'anarchistic' music: starting with regularity and then process regularity as far as possible.
Pit - remembering a hidden hero of FFM.(No RUM!) This song started as an experiment with some ableton-live features on my laptop. I tried out to compile elements of a blues piece with digital devices, combined them to one piece and then I was 'inspired' to talk into the microphone about a friend who tomorrow will be part of a great ceremony of the city of FFM in honour of his work for so many years in this city. Clearly, these words are not sufficient to describe his contribution to the city adequately, but the song can give a hint, generates some flavour for 'more'...
Dream where ever it's possible.(RUM 80%) This song started as a birthday song for two woman who celebrated their birthdays together during Jan-24, 2014. There where some ideas around the topic of growing experience when you are becoming 'aged' and the great danger to think that now everything is clear, everything has happened, nothing more will change.. this indicates a deep 'illness' of your soul.. all the dreams of the past have gone... and here the songs sends you this message: start dreaming again; time has not stopped before you are really dead...
(+++++)Trio PiBaCe(RUM 100% - partially patternd) Friday evening, turning on the machines. Playing. Finished. Without drums ... I like it..
A Rumbling Whole with a Voice.(RUM 100% - with pattern) This is the next stage in an experiment where I first created an instrumental piece 'A Rumbling Whole'. Then I added some voice in regular breaks, unconnected words... The experiment explores the effect of changing between sound without voice and then only voice. The words have been selected by random, but because every hearer has a bunch of experience, he/ she will interpret these random words with his/ her knowledge trying to make these words 'coherent', correlating them with some 'sense' ... thus every hearer will hear a different song...
MB having a tumor in her brain....(RUM 100%) There was an external event hitting my feelings and the detection, how I can connect my handsonic hdp-15 via an midi interface with my ableton software. This led to a first experiment which generated the sounds you can hear here. ... the brain is upset about the strange other cells ....I played one track by hand and used a second and third track to to chain these sounds by different effects. I repeated this by rcording another manual input again chaining the effects by two other tracks. This is amazing: similarity and difference at once.
Keyboard-Drum voices Little Symphony No.4b(RUM 100%). The same as in the sound 'Keyboard-Drum Little Symphony No.4' before, but I have added some voice enhanced with effects, translated this voice into a midi file coupled to a midi-choir library.
